Beginning Racing
The Club starts training puppies on the race track when they are 9 months old. Racing earlier is not recommended as they are still growing. However, you can bring your pup along to race meets earlier (as long as they are fully vacinated) to socialise them with other whippets and get used to the sights, sounds, and smells of the track. They soon catch on that this an exciting outing.
Track training is started with a slip race. Slip means that each dog is taken by a handler that they do not know well, to a position about a half the way around the track and then as the lure passes, the handlers let go of them so that they can chase the lure.
Only one slip or race is permitted per race meet.
